Virginia Cosmetology License

The process for getting a license in cosmetology, nail technology, hairdressing, esthetics, or barbering from the state of Virginia, all students must fulfill the requirements listed below by the Virginia State Board of Cosmetology. When obtaining a Virginia cosmetology license, there is no wrong path to take, as long as you have completed your coursework at a Virginia cosmetology school.

As stated by the Virginia State Board of Cosmetology, to obtain a Virginia cosmetology license, one must have attended a Virginia cosmetology school or when moving into the state, the Virginia Board of Cosmetology, requires you to satisfy their guidelines.

After completing your training, Virginia cosmetology license guidelines require you to pass a licensing exam issue by the Virginia State Board of Cosmetology. Upon passing you will earn your Virginia cosmetology license. You are now permitted to work in the state of Virginia.

Virginia (VA) Board of Cosmetology Requirements
Cosmetology: 1,500 hours
Barbering: 1,500 hours
Nail Technology: 150 hours

Reciprocity
Upon proper application to the board, any person currently licensed to practice as a barber, cosmetologist or nail technician in any other state or jurisdiction of the United States and who has completed both a training program and a written and practical examination that is substantially equivalent to that required by these regulations may be issued a barber or cosmetology license, respectively, without an examination.
