Are you bored with your current hair color? Are you getting older and want to conceal the grey hairs that are starting to appear? Well thankfully, you have the option of coloring your hair.

Hair salons offer coloring services but they can sometimes be expensive. If you’re looking for a cost alternative to using a salon, you can actually color your hair at home. Here are a few tips for at home hair coloring.

1. Start with healthy hair.

Begin by deep conditioning and shampooing your hair. Give your hair a couple days for the natural oils to resurface on your scalp. This will offer protection for your skin against the harsh chemicals during the coloring process. The oils will also help the color set better, and give more even uniform results.

2. Gather up your coloring tools.

Find an old t-shirt to wear, and scrounge up some old towels and washcloths that your are okay with getting stained. You’ll need some hair clips as well. You’ll also need a handheld mirror to see the back of your head, and last but not least, you’ll need a timer.

3. Getting prepared.

Take a little time to get familiar with the density of your hair. Practice sectioning your hair before you have to handle it with one hand while holding an applicator bottle in the other.

4. Choose a color.

This is a matter of personal preference, however, certain colors make a statement, while other colors create a mood.

5. Let the coloring begin.

Be advised that the ends of hair can be more porous as compared to the hair shaft. In addition, your body’s natural heat speeds up the process of hair coloring, therefore start the color application in the mid-lengths of long hair and work the color up to the roots and then down to ends. If your hair is thick as well as long, it may be best to color it in sections due to the processing time.

6. Wash and dry.

After shampooing your hair, always blot it to dry. Don’t rub hair dry or wrap it in a towel. If you choose to use a using a blow dryer, dry your head, not your hair. Over drying hair removes the moisture and also results in static.

7. Keep it conditioned.

Be sure to condition your hair at least once every two weeks. This helps to restore moisture and shine to color treated hair. As the roots of yoyur hair grow out, a color enhancing conditioner will help your natural hair color blend with your color treated hair.
