South Dakota Cosmetology License

The process for getting a license in cosmetology, nail technology, hairdressing, esthetics, or barbering from the state of South Dakota, all students must fulfill the requirements listed below by the South Dakota State Board of Cosmetology. When obtaining a South Dakota cosmetology license, there is no wrong path to take, as long as you have completed your coursework at a South Dakota cosmetology school.

As stated by the South Dakota State Board of Cosmetology, to obtain a South Dakota cosmetology license, one must have attended a South Dakota cosmetology school or when moving into the state, the South Dakota Board of Cosmetology, requires you to satisfy their guidelines.

After completing your training, South Dakota cosmetology license guidelines require you to pass a licensing exam issue by the South Dakota State Board of Cosmetology. Upon passing you will earn your South Dakota cosmetology license. You are now permitted to work in the state of South Dakota.

South Dakota Board of Cosmetology Requirements
The South Dakota Cosmetology Commission shall issue a license to any person who meets the following requirements:
• 18 years or older
• Evidence of completion of high school or GED
• Submission of application to Cosmetology Commission
• Pay examination fee, which includes the first license
• Passage of 3 examinations – NIC national written, NIC national practical, and South Dakota state laws

Required hours of education from an approved South Dakota cosmetology school are as follows:
COSMETOLOGY: 2100 hours
ESTHETICS: 600 hours
NAIL TECHNOLOGY: 400 hours

Reciprocity
You may become a licensed cosmetologist, esthetician or nail technician in South Dakota through reciprocity if your current state license has equal or greater requirements than South Dakota. (If you do not have a current license, then you should apply as an out-of-state student.)
