South Carolina Cosmetology License

The process for getting a license in cosmetology, nail technology, hairdressing, esthetics, or barbering from the state of South Carolina, all students must fulfill the requirements listed below by the South Carolina State Board of Cosmetology. When obtaining a South Carolina cosmetology license, there is no wrong path to take, as long as you have completed your coursework at a South Carolina cosmetology school.

As stated by the South Carolina State Board of Cosmetology, to obtain a South Carolina cosmetology license, one must have attended a South Carolina cosmetology school or when moving into the state, the South Carolina Board of Cosmetology, requires you to satisfy their guidelines.

After completing your training, SC cosmetology license guidelines require you to pass a licensing exam issue by the South Carolina State Board of Cosmetology. Upon passing you will earn your South Carolina cosmetology license. You are now permitted to work in the state of South Carolina.

COSMETOLOGY: 1500 hours
ESTHETICS: 450 hours
NAIL TECHNOLOGY: 300 hours

Reciprocity
This is granted to applicants who have completed the same requirements as South Carolina. You may have to pass the national exam. Please see below.

General South Carolina Cosmetology License Requirements for All Cosmetology and Barbering Applicants
All applicants applying for a South Carolina cosmetology license must meet the following requirements:

• Take and pass a written and practical exam
• Be at least 16 years old
• Have at least a 10th grade education or equivalency
• Submit an application
• Pay the prescribed fee

Reciprocity – South Carolina Cosmetology License Requirements for Applicants Licensed in Another State
Any person licensed to practice barbering, hairdressing/cosmetic therapy, manicuring or esthetics in another state where the requirements are the equivalent of those of this state, shall be entitled to a license for barbering, cosmetician, manicurist or esthetician, upon the acceptance of his or her credentials by the Department. The applicant must have satisfactorily passed a written and practical examination administered by the South Carolina Department or from another state board.
