Rhode Island Cosmetology License

The process for getting a license in cosmetology, nail technology, hairdressing, esthetics, or barbering from the state of Rhode Island, all students must fulfill the requirements listed below by the Rhode Island State Board of Cosmetology. When obtaining a Rhode Island cosmetology license, there is no wrong path to take, as long as you have completed your coursework at a Rhode Island cosmetology school.

As stated by the Rhode Island State Board of Cosmetology, to obtain a Rhode Island cosmetology license, one must have attended a Rhode Island cosmetology school or when moving into the state, the Rhode Island Board of Cosmetology, requires you to satisfy their guidelines.

After completing your training, Rhode Island cosmetology license guidelines require you to pass a licensing exam issue by the Rhode Island State Board of Cosmetology. Upon passing you will earn your Rhode Island cosmetology license. You are now permitted to work in the state of Rhode Island.

COSMETOLOGY: 1500 hours
ESTHETICS: 600 hours
NAIL TECHNOLOGY: 300 hours
ELECTROLOGY: 650 hours

General Qualifications for All Cosmetology and Barbering Applicants
All applicants wanting to obtain a Rhode Island Cosmetology License must meet the following requirements:

Be at least 18 years of age
Be a citizen of the United States of America or be lawfully eligible to work
Be of good moral character
Be a high school graduate or hold the equivalent thereof
Have satisfactorily completed a course of instruction in an approved school
Have satisfactorily passed a written and practical examination approved by the Department

Rhode Island Cosmetology License Requirements for Applicants Licensed in Another State
Any person licensed to practice barbering, hairdressing/cosmetic therapy, manicuring or esthetics in another state where the requirements are the equivalent of those of this state shall be entitled to a license for barbering, cosmetician, manicurist or esthetician, upon the acceptance of his or her credentials by the Department.

The applicant must have satisfactorily passed a written and practical examination administered by the Rhode Island Department or from another state board
