New Mexico Cosmetology License

The process for getting a license in cosmetology, nail technology, hairdressing, esthetics, or barbering from the state of New Mexico, all students must fulfill the requirements listed below by the New Mexico State Board of Cosmetology. When obtaining a New Mexico cosmetology license, there is no wrong path to take, as long as you have completed your coursework at a New Mexico cosmetology school.

As stated by the New Mexico State Board of Cosmetology, to obtain a New Mexico cosmetology license, one must have attended a New Mexico cosmetology school or when moving into the state, the New Mexico Board of Cosmetology, requires you to satisfy their guidelines.

After completing your training, New Mexico cosmetology license guidelines require you to pass a licensing exam issue by the New Mexico State Board of Cosmetology. Upon passing you will earn your New Mexico cosmetology license. You are now permitted to work in the state of New Mexico.

New Mexico Board of Cosmetology Requirements
Cosmetologist: 1,600 hours
Barber: 1,200 hours
Manicurist/Pedicurist: 350 hours
Esthetician: 600 hours
Electrologist: 600 hours
Manicurist/Esthetician: 600 hours
Instructor: 1,000 hours

New Mexico Board of Cosmetology Additional Requirements
All applicants must be at least 17 years of age and have a minimum of 2 years in high school or its equivalent.

Reciprocity
Applicants who have not completed a course of study equal to the requirements of this state may receive credit for work experience. For every 6 full months of work completed, the applicant will be credited with 150 hours of training. Any applicants that HAVE completed a course with requirements equal to this state must furnish a transcript of hours and a copy of a valid license.
