Michigan Cosmetology License

The process for getting a license in cosmetology, nail technology, hairdressing, esthetics, or barbering from the state of Michigan, all students must fulfill the requirements listed below by the Michigan State Board of Cosmetology. When obtaining a Michigan cosmetology license, there is no wrong path to take, as long as you have completed your coursework at a Michigan cosmetology school.

As stated by the Michigan State Board of Cosmetology, to obtain a Michigan cosmetology license, one must have attended a Michigan cosmetology school or when moving into the state, the Michigan Board of Cosmetology, requires you to satisfy their guidelines.

After completing your training, Michigan cosmetology license guidelines require you to pass a licensing exam issue by the Michigan State Board of Cosmetology. Upon passing you will earn your Michigan cosmetology license. You are now permitted to work in the state of Michigan.

Michigan State Board Requirements
ESTHETICS: 400 hours
ELECTROLOGY: 300 hours
BARBERING: 1750 hours

Additional Requirements for a Michigan Cosmetology License
All applicants must be at least 17 years of age and have a minimum level of education equivalent to the 9th grade in order to obtain a Michigan cosmetology license.

Michigan State Board Reciprocity
All individuals licensed in another state may obtain their license in the state of Michigan from the Michigan board of cosmetology by making an application to the board and meeting the requirements of 17 years of age and a 9th grade education. No examination is required. For those individuals whose states have requirements less than those in Michigan a credit of 100 hours per every 6 months work experience will be awarded.
