Kentucky Cosmetology License

The process for getting a license in cosmetology, nail technology, hairdressing, esthetics, or barbering from the state of Kentucky, all students must fulfill the requirements listed below by the Kentucky State Board of Cosmetology. When obtaining a Kentucky cosmetology license, there is no wrong path to take, as long as you have completed your coursework at a Kentucky cosmetology school.

As stated by the Kentucky State Board of Cosmetology, to obtain a Kentucky cosmetology license, one must have attended a Kentucky cosmetology school or when moving into the state, the Kentucky Board of Cosmetology, requires you to satisfy their guidelines.

After completing your training, Kentucky cosmetology license guidelines require you to pass a licensing exam issue by the Kentucky State Board of Cosmetology. Upon passing you will earn your Kentucky cosmetology license. You are now permitted to work in the state of Kentucky.

Kentucky State Board of Cosmetology License Requirements
The Kentucky State Board of Hairdressers and Cosmetologists shall issue a license to any person who meets the following requirements:

Apprentice Cosmetologist/Cosmetologist:
• 1,800 hours
• 10th grade education

Nail Technician:
• 600 hours
• 10th grade education

Esthetician:
• 1,000 hours
• 12th grade education

Apprentice Instructor/Instructor:
• 1,000 hours
• 12th grade education

Kentucky State Board of Cosmetology Additional Requirements
In addition, applicants are required to pass an examination prescribed by the board to determine fitness to practice and paid the appropriate fees.

Reciprocity
Any applicant from out-of-state who holds a valid cosmetologist or esthetician license and can show proof of 2 years’ current experience, may come before the state board for examination (practical only). Applicants must pay the out-of-state examination fee and the license fee.
