California Cosmetology License

The requirements for obtaining a cosmetology license in California from the California State Board of Cosmetology in cosmetology, esthetics, nail technology, barbering, or electrology are listed below.

Board of Barbering and Cosmetology License Requirements
COSMETOLOGIST: 1600 hours
ESTHETICIAN: 600 hours
MANICURIST: 400 hours
BARBER: 1500 hours
ELECTROLOGIST: 600 Hours

Reciprocity (as stated by the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology)
No reciprocity available. Applicants must take written and practical exam. In the case of barbers, Barbers have to take both a written and a practical examination, however, barber instructors require only a written exam as issued by the Board of Barbering and Cosmetology.
